Below are two (2) facts from the following link, literacyprojectfoundation.org/community/statistics/:

  • "Approximately 50% of Americans read so poorly that they are unable to perform simple tasks such as reading prescription drug labels"
  • "Illiteracy has become such a serious problem in our country that 44 million adults are now unable to read a simple story to their children"

You may read other statistics at the above site. The information is startling!

Please respond to the Blog question: How does illiteracy impact a person's attainment of Biblical knowledge?

Because a person cannot read a simple story, he/she will not be able to read the Bible. Neither will he/she be able to understand parables and other teachings requiring meditation. (I think of the Apostle Paul’s writings that even educated theologians can hardly comprehend!) This lack of spiritual growth feeds into the corrosion of social and moral values, generation after generation after generation. You get the picture. One way to combat this deterioration is to teach people to read. People are perishing for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6).

    Hi! I'm Verna Harvey.

I dropped out of high school before completing the 11th grade. Since that time, I've worked very hard and have obtained my GED and earned three college degrees! Life was extremely hard before earning my GED. With the attainment of each college degree, additional doors were opened.

I know that education will never solve all problems. However, educational attainment will assist in communicating and implementing personal and global changes. That's why I am passionate about assisting and encouraging those without a high school diploma or its equivalent, as well as students pursuing college degrees to, Finish What You Started. (By the way, this is the tentative title of the newest book I'm working hard to get published.)

EDUCATION is so important that I am asking you to join with me or another organization in helping to spur students towards educational success be it a GED or college degrees. America needs to change the current trajectory of illiteracy in our country because we are perishing.

YOU can help change the trajectory. Here's one way. Visit my contact page to start the process in scheduling a time for me to share my inspiring, yet challenging story with students, parents and/or leaders. At the venue, I will share points I've learned as a student, colleague, instructor, mother, and wife. That's nearly four decades--40 years--of knowledge! These points, if implemented, will help students to complete his/her studies. I know firsthand what a difference this knowledge made in my life. It can make a difference in someone else's life as well.

Hope to hear from you soon!
